Denver running backs Correll Buckhalter, Knowshon Moreno and LenDale White had plenty of time to commiserate while rehabilitating injuries for most of training camp. Meanwhile, Denver proceeded to just about abandon the rushing attack in its first two preseason games.

Back in March, the New York Giants signed former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Jim Sorgi to be the primary backup to starter Eli Manning. That plan was thrown off Tuesday, however, when Sorgi went on injured reserve with a bad shoulder.That leaves unproven second-year man Rhett Bomar as Manning’s No. 2. Back in Indianapolis, without Sorgi, Eli’s older Peyton is now backed up by Curtis Painter, who like Bomar, was a 2009 late-round pick. John Elway pulled an Elway on the Elway hole. “Seven on 7,” the Hall of Famer said sadly after carding an even-par 72 Wednesday in his first senior golf tournament since turning 50 in June.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will get one last glimpse of Ben Roethlisberger playing quarterback before he begins his NFL-mandated suspension. They can only wonder what kind of shape they’ll be in when Roethlisberger returns to the field in October. While the starters usually play only a couple of series in the final exhibition game, Roethlisberger is lobbying to take snaps in the no-huddle offense…
