Midas touch to Giambi's uniform
Written by Tnedator
May 17, 2008 at 11:07 AM

Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi caused a stir Saturday when the New York Daily News reported — on the front page — that Giambi wears a gold thong under his uniform when trying to snap out of a slump. "I was blown away," Yankees broadcaster and former pitcher David Cone said. "You've got to be pretty confident in yourself to let that one out." Giambi, batting .193, has kept the shiny thong in his locker since he played for the Oakland A's. Several teammates said they have tried wearing it, too, including shortstop Derek Jeter, pictured at left with Giambi, and outfielder Johnny Damon. Giambi hit his team-leading eighth home run Saturday in the Yankees' 7-4 loss to the Mets. The Associated Press; AP photo

Fireworks a dud for Stern
Written by Tnedator
May 17, 2008 at 11:06 AM

David Stern wants to stamp out fires. The NBA commissioner said this week that he's concerned with the proliferation of pregame pyrotechnics and suggested that the league come up with some regulations. "I think they're ridiculous," Stern said. "I think that the noise, the fire, the smoke, is a kind of assault that we should seriously consider reviewing. Maybe I'm not the demographic that likes to be assaulted by loud rap, smoke and pyrotechnics. I'm outdated, but I think it's time for us to say, 'Hey, guys, let's look at it one more time.' " Hey, the No Fun League philosophy works for football, so maybe it can help the NBA. Los Angeles Times

Denver Broncos Inside Slant
Written by Tnedator
May 16, 2008 at 07:30 AM

In 2005, the Denver Broncos drafted troubled running back Maurice Clarett, probably the biggest character risk in that draft. He failed miserably, not even making it past the first round of cuts in training camp, but two years later the Broncos took another chance. They took defensive tackle Marcus Thomas, another player who slid in the draft because of character issues.

He failed miserably, not even making it past the first round of cuts in training camp, but two years later the Broncos took another chance. They took defensive tackle Marcus Thomas, another player who slid in the draft because of character issues.

Denver has often tried to find value in off-field risks, through free agency (Daryl Gardener, Travis Henry), trades (Javon Walker) or the draft. This year in the draft, the Broncos stayed clear of any potential problems.

There were no obvious character risks in their class, which included a couple of players who are already married with a child.

Paybacks are, uh, pennies
Written by Tnedator
May 16, 2008 at 03:50 AM

Ken Griffey Jr. owed Cincinnati Reds teammate Josh Fogg $1,500, and paying by check just wouldn't do. So when Fogg arrived at the Reds' clubhouse Wednesday, he found his locker filled with 150,000 pennies — 60 boxes, each weighing 16 pounds and containing $25 worth of pennies. "Basically, it's like having 60 bowling balls in your locker, only with no holes to pick them up with," Griffey said. Neither player would say why Griffey owed Fogg the money. Griffey had threatened to pay it off in pennies, but Fogg, left, didn't believe him. "I'm going to take them out to the bullpen and count them," Fogg said. "I've got a lot of time on my hands out there." The Associated Press/AP file photo
